Privacy Policy

Last updated October 18, 2026. Applies to the Shredhead iPhone and Android apps and shredhead.us.

The short version

  • We store your account details, the check-ins you confirm, and what you post or send.
  • We do not track your location around the clock. Your phone watches for resort and trail boundaries on the device itself.
  • Your friends are told you are riding only after you tap Yes to check in.
  • We do not sell your personal information and we do not show you third-party ads.
  • You can delete your account whenever you like.

1. Who we are

Shredhead is run by Shredhead LLC, a Colorado limited liability company in Boulder, Colorado ("Shredhead", "we", "us"). Shredhead helps skiers, snowboarders, mountain bikers and surfers find riding partners, join clubs, share rides and check in where they ride. Questions about this policy go to donny@shredhead.us.

2. What we collect

What you give us

  • Account details: your username, email address and password, or the details Google shares if you sign in with Google. If you give us a phone number, we use it to verify your account and, if you choose, to help friends find you. Passwords are stored in hashed form.
  • Profile details: the sports you pick, skill level, riding style, favorite resorts, club or school, and a profile photo. Gender and age are optional.
  • Check-ins and ride days: the resort, trail or surf spot you check in at, the sport and the time. We use these to show who is riding, to count your days, streaks and leaderboards, and to notify your friends.
  • Content you create: chat messages, posts and comments, stories, carpool listings and bookings (including pick-up places, times and seats), club activity, and the photos you upload.
  • Friends and groups: who you connect with, requests, groups and clubs you join.
  • Contacts (optional): if you allow it, the app reads your contacts on your device to find friends already on Shredhead. See section 3.
  • Strava (optional): if you connect Strava, we store that the connection exists and the ride activity you allow us to sync.

What the app collects automatically

  • Notification token: so we can send the push notifications you allow.
  • Usage and crash data: the iPhone app uses Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics, and we keep our own simple counters, to learn which features are used (for example switching sports or starting a check-in at a named place) and to fix crashes. This includes your device type and approximate region from your IP address.
  • Technical data: your IP address and device details, which servers receive whenever an app connects to the internet.

Purchases

Merchandise is sold through Shopify. Shopify handles checkout and payment, and we do not receive your card number.

3. Location, check-ins and friend notifications

Location is the part people ask about most, so here is exactly what happens.

  • Resort and trail boundaries. If you allow location access (the app asks for "Always" so it can work when closed), your phone watches for you entering a short list of resort and trail areas. That watching is done by your phone, and we do not receive a stream of your coordinates or a map of where you have been.
  • You decide. When your phone sees you enter one of those areas, it shows a notification asking whether you are riding. Only if you tap Yes do we record a check-in (the name of the place, the sport and the time) and send a notification to your friends so they know you are riding there. If you do nothing or tap No, nothing is recorded or shared.
  • Trail suggestions. The app compares your device location with trail start points on your phone to suggest a check-in. This comparison happens on the device and the coordinates are not uploaded.
  • Optional ride recording. If you start recording a ride, your phone uses GPS and motion sensors to work out distance, vertical feet and speed. We save the summary (date, duration, distance, vertical, top and average speed and sport), not your route.
  • Posts. If you add a place to a post, we store that place name and its coordinates with the post, and other riders can see them.
  • Your controls. You can change location access to "While Using" or "Never" in your phone settings at any time. Without background access, automatic prompts will stop and you can still check in by hand.

4. How we use your information

  • To run Shredhead: create and secure your account, show riders to each other, deliver messages, carpools and club features, record check-ins, and keep leaderboards and streaks.
  • To send notifications about friends, clubs, carpools and conditions. You can turn these off in your phone settings.
  • To keep Shredhead safe: investigate reports, prevent abuse and fraud, and answer support requests.
  • To understand which features work and fix crashes.
  • To meet legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use it for advertising by third parties, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

5. Who can see your information

  • Other riders. Your username, profile photo, sports, skill level, club and check-ins are visible to other Shredhead users, depending on the feature. Your friends see your check-ins. Posts are visible to riders in the same sport. Messages are visible to the people in that chat.
  • Service providers that work for us. Google Firebase (login, database, file storage, notifications, analytics and crash reports), Google Sign-In, Google Maps and Places (maps and place search), Shopify (the merchandise store), our cloud hosting provider, and Strava if you connect it. They may use the data only to provide their service to us, under their own terms.
  • Public data sources. The app loads map data and news headlines from third-party services. Those requests include your device's IP address, as any internet request does, but no account details.
  • Legal and safety. We may disclose information if the law requires it or to protect someone's safety, rights or property.
  • Business changes. If Shredhead is sold or merged, your information may move to the new owner, who must honor this policy.

6. Keeping and deleting your information

We keep your information while your account is open. You can delete your account in the app (Profile, then the menu, then Delete account) or by following the steps on our Delete your account page. Your account is deactivated right away and hidden from other riders. We then delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, apart from anything we must keep for legal, security or fraud-prevention reasons. Messages you sent in group chats may remain visible to other members without your name. Copies in backups are removed on a normal cycle.

7. Security

We protect data in transit with encryption, store passwords in hashed form, and limit who can reach our systems. No service can promise perfect security, so please use a strong, unique password.

8. Children

Shredhead is for people 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we will delete it.

9. Your choices and rights

You can edit your profile, switch off notifications, change location, contacts and camera permissions, and delete your account at any time. Depending on where you live, including California and Colorado, you may have the right to know what we collect, get a copy, correct it, delete it, and appeal a decision about your request. You will not be treated differently for using these rights. To use them, email donny@shredhead.us from your account email. We reply within 45 days.

Because we do not sell your personal information or use it for targeted advertising, there is nothing to opt out of in those categories.

10. Other people on Shredhead

Shredhead connects you with other riders. We do not control what they do, and what happens between you and other users is covered in our Terms of Use. You can report or block anyone from the app or by emailing us.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. We will post the new version here with a new date, and tell you in the app if the change is significant.
